Wellness

At Enso Yoga & Wellness Center we are passionately devoted to your wellness and the wellness of our community. Enso Yoga & Wellness Center is an Institute, providing evidence-based proven therapies to support whole health and wellness for you and your family. We offer education, programs, services, classes and body-mind-based Health Healing therapies in a fully integrative approach. As more health care consumers choose alternative practices to complement or replace their existing medical care, it is essential to become educated and discriminating about the options.

Here are some things to keep in mind when considering alternative medical treatment:

  • Learn your options, keeping in mind that alternative health healing covers everything from fads to promising and proven therapies.
  • Seek referrals from family members, friends and other health care providers. Consider interviewing more than one provider.
  • Seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health care provider before starting any new treatment or procedure involving your health.
  • Do not delay seeking medical care - or disregard taking medical advice for the reason that something you made may read or hear about alternative medicine. Attempt to verify the information with other sources.
  • Consider the source of information you review. Many Web sites are maintained by adherents of particular alternative approaches. They are going to be very enthusiastic about their methods. Conduct a reality check. Seek information with balanced views and consult several credible sources.
  • Consider alternative medicine a supplement to - not a replacement for - conventional medicine.

No one other then you is responsible for your healing and welfare. Please choose to take the responsibility to ask questions and make a knowledgeable decision for it. The moment that you choose to give any decision to anyone else, you are choosing to take the control of your fate out of your hands and put it in someone else’s hands.

Why Meditate?

If you're a skeptic like I used to be, then you may not readily accept claims made by those who practice ancient contemplative practices supporting health and well-being. However, with very little searching, you will discover numerous interesting and objective scientific research studies that have been conducted on meditation.

Here are some no-nonsense Reasons to Meditate supported by recent scientific research:

  • Reduce Your Stress Level-Research performed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and research conducted at Harvard Medical School show that mediation changes brain waves in the amygdala and the autonomic nervous system, which govern fear and stress respectively. These studies showed that those who meditate tend to be calmer and more relaxed than those who don't.
  • Increase Your Intelligence-Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have shown that people who meditate have thicker gray matter than those who don't. Otherwise known as the cerebral cortex, gray matter is the part of the brain that you use for conscious thought, and thinning gray matter is associated with aging.
  • Be Happier-MRI scans of long-term meditators show that they have increased activity in the left pre-frontal coretex, and suppressed activity in the right pre-fontal cortex, a state that has been shown to be associated with increased positive emotions. This backs up the subjective claims that people who meditate are happier as a result.
  • Lower Your Blood Pressure-Several studies indicate that transcendental meditation can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke.
  • Prevent or Reverse Heart Disease-An article published in the May 2005 issue of The American Journal of Cardiology concludes that meditation may significantly reduce the risk of death by heart disease.
  • Reduce Pain-Multiple studies have shown that meditation can help control chronic pain. Many hospitals now routinely use meditation as part of a program to help patients suffering from long-term pain.
  • Enhance Your Immune System-Researchers working with breast cancer patients have demonstrated a connection between mindfulness meditation and increased immune system function.
  • Stay Warm-Although it sounds like fantasy fiction, a study done at Harvard University has shown that experienced Tibetan monks can actually increase their core body temperature just by meditating.

Credo

In an Enso Yoga & Wellness Center Wellness Massage session, a combination of techniques are used to provide the greatest overall therapeutic, restorative and stress-relieving benefits. They include Therapeutic Massage Unwinding, Neuromuscular Release, Visceral Manipulation, Structural Integration, Trigger Point Therapy. Following is a description of the techniques as well their physical and emotional benefits.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger points are physical blocks or knots within the muscle. Headaches, chronic neck and shoulder pain, low back pain, and tingling or numbness in the hands or feet are common indications of Trigger Points. I will locate these points and apply sustained, but tolerable pressure until they are released. Along with a decrease of pain and an increase in range of motion, the client will experience a physical lightening as of a burden being lifted.

Neuromuscular Therapy

Neuromuscular Therapy(NMT) is a treatment that not only responds to the symptoms but addresses the underlying causes of the pain. By working with posture, body mechanics, trigger points, tight and injured soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia), NMT results in a release of pain patterns by releasing tissues held in positions of "over compensation." This is accomplished through the use of hands and elbows. Deep-tissue massage and cross-fibering (massaging tissue horizontally) helps to realign your body so the soft tissues and bones can work together with greater ease. Painful areas are addressed by working with those muscles that are distorting the body's postural integrity along with those producing pain in specific areas.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork. The word shiatsu means "finger pressure", and shiatsu is sometimes described as a finger pressure massage. Like acupuncture, shiatsu is based on the holistic system of traditional Chinese medicine.

Shiatsu therapists use finger and palm pressure to energetic pathways, called meridians to improve the flow of qi. A scientific explanation is that shiatsu calms an overactive sympathetic nervous system, which improves circulation, relieves stiff muscles, and alleviates stress.

What does Shiatsu feel like?

The Shiatsu therapist applies pressure using his or her fingers, thumbs, and/or palms in a continuous rhythmic sequence. The pressure feels more localized, because unlike other types of massage, the finger pads are used to apply pressure for most of the treatment instead of the entire palm. Most people say shiatsu is as relaxing as a classic forms of massage therapy.

What should I expect during my visit?

Shiatsu treatments are done on a low massage table or on a Shiatsu mat on the floor. Unlike other forms of massage, with shiatsu no massage oil is applied, so you remain fully clothed during the treatment. You may be asked to bring comfortable clothing to wear.

Customizing Your Massage

Hot Oil Treatments

To get the most out of your massage experience choose the therapeutic complex that best suits your individual needs. All complexes are made from pure essential oils and botanical extracts:

  • Relaxing: A blend of lavender, calendula, rosewood, orange, hops, cinnamon, blue malva, and evening primrose. This complex melts away stress and completely relaxes the body and mind.
  • Uplifting: A blend of verbena, grapefruit, lemongrass, orange, bergamot, and rosewood. This complex revitalizes the body and renews the spirit.
  • Detoxifying: A blend of rosemary, burdock, echinacea, lemon, figwort, watercress, geranium, coriander, orange, and eucalyptus. This complex releases toxins due to stress and returns the body to its natural state of balance.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-be. This massage includes techniques safe for women during pregnancy and labor and after delivery. A great baby shower or postnatal present!

Healing Arts

Bodyworks

Cranio Sacral Therapy-Works with the structure, the nervous system, and the cranial nerves. It is a gentle method of detection and correction that encourages your own natural healing mechanisms. The treatment process can range from relief of symptoms to resolution of the very core of problems. It is usually done fully clothed, but can also be done in conjunction with other therapeutic modalities.

QIGONG-This traditional Chinese treatment combines hands-on and hands-off techniques that balance the flow of qi (energy) through the body, move and relieve qi blockages, and improve circulation. Qigong is also a combination of timed breathing and gentle flowing movement, meditation, visualization, and conscious intent all working together to achieve an integrated adjustment of mind and body in order to better cultivate, circulate, and balance qi, or life force. Qigong theory is the basis of traditional Chinese medicine and is used to treat many serious illnesses, as well as for relaxation.

Reflexology-This therapy involves manipulation of specific reflex areas in the foot, hands, and ears that correspond to other parts of the body. Sometimes referred to as zone therapy, this bodywork involves application of pressure to these reflex zones to stimulate body organs and relieve areas of congestion. Similar to acupressure principles, reflexology works with the body’s energy flow to stimulate self-healing and maintain balance in physical function. This technique is used to reduce pain, increase relaxation, and stimulate circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids.

healing arts

Rehabilitative/Trigger Point Therapy-Trigger point therapy is meant to assist in recovering from an injury or chronic pain. This type of work uses cross fiber friction and deep pressure to bring about release of trigger points in soft tissues. Trigger points are places in muscles that are especially tender and, when stimulated, cause nerves to "fire" pain to other parts of the body (known as referred pain). Research has shown that trigger points are the primary cause of pain 75% of the time and are at least a part of nearly every pain problem. For more information visit http://www.triggerpointbook.com/.

Structural Integration-Structural Integration (SI), also known as rolfing, is a process of re-education of the body through movement & touch. It systematically releases patterns of stress and impaired function. The primary focus of Structural Integration is facilitating the relationship between gravity & the human body.

Energy Balancing

"E=MC2" Einstein

Quantum physics has clearly revealed an irrefutable truth that everything in the universe is simply some form of pure energy, vibrating and pulsing at various relative frequencies. Along with light and sound spectrums, we now realize that what we perceive as being "solid" is actually energy moving, although very slowly on the quantum level. Energy Healing, or vibratory therapy, can be thought of as creating a state of relative balance and harmony, called homeostasis, where energy is flowing through our bodies without resistance. In order to experience this flow of energy healing, it is essential that we nurture, purify and treat our "emotional, physical and mental energy fields" with care and love.

Our feelings and emotions are the result of our belief systems, and have a direct effect on our body functions, health, illness, and life experiences. Our body's energy healing communication systems can be compromised by negative thoughts and feeling from limited beliefs. There is a vibratory interference pattern associated with each limiting belief, resulting in low vibratory emotions and thoughts, which distort our subtle energy field. Left untreated, these distortions can jeopardize our state of wellness, and can manifest as physical illness. At Enso Yoga & Wellness Center, our Energy Healing techniques release blocked energy stored in the physical and subtle energy fields.

balance

Extensive integrative medical research has demonstrated that the health, wellness and energy healing of our physical body are largely determined by the strength and clarity of this subtle energy field. We are inherently whole and complete beings, yet the stressors of our busy lifestyles can often have a negative effect on our sense of wholeness. Stress can also cause the flow of energy within the body and subtle energy fields to be imbalanced or blocked, and illness may result. For optimum health and energy healing to occur, it is equally important to eat properly, think positively and exercise regularly. You may be experiencing some of the detrimental effects of stress or toxins on your energy field, and not are consciously aware of it. Energy balancing therapy includes acupressure, healing touch, Reiki, sound therapy, emotional freedom technique, and guided imagery.

Acupuncture

Traditional acupuncture has been practiced for more than 3,000 years. Its benefits are becoming well-documented in western medical journals and popular press. This low cost, non-invasive form of medical care uses hair-thin needles inserted at specific points along a pathway, called the body's meridian, to keep energy, called chi or qi, moving through the body in order restore harmony or repair disease.

The World Health Organization states that acupuncture provides relief from over 40 conditions including:

  • pain associated with bone or muscles, such as back and knee pain
  • stomach conditions such as chronic indigestion and constipation
  • menstrual or menopausal complaints
  • insomnia
  • asthma and allergies
  • depression and anxiety

Though many seek acupuncture to treat imbalances, many clients come for regular treatments to achieve increased energy, calm, and enjoyment in life. Acupuncture can be a powerful preventative measure to keep you healthy all year.
